This past weekend Bruce and I had a rare experience.  We went to see a performance called "Joan of Arc, The Night Before..." at the Boyce Vance Theater on 1165 Angelina in the GW Carver Museum in AUSTIN.

My expectations were low because it was a one woman show, performed by the author and the subject matter was bound to be dreary.

I was blown away by the depth of the performance, the quality of the acting and the poetry of the writing.

It was a little more than an hour long (I lost track of time) and during that hour I experienced every emotion a human can.  It was deeply spiritual but not totally sorrowful as might be expected.  I felt as if I was witnessing the description of a vision quest.  I also felt as if I had just been to the BEST church experience ever.  The exploration of evil moved me deeply.

I highly recommend this play.

"She took us there" was the proclamation of my wife, Cheryl, following a most riveting performance by Daniela Paluselli. Ms. Paluselli takes her audience on an unforgettable, psycho-spiritual odyssey of a heroine so focused on her mission in life, that even her impending demise failed to shake her dedicated soul.

The director uses a very simplistic set to optimum levels. Extraneous and seemingly insignificant objects are used for extraordinarily sublime effect. Daniela's energy and emotion keeps the audience transfixed for duration of the play's approximate ninety minutes. The script and pace of the act never lags and the only impediment occurs at the end when  we selfishly felt torn in releasing Joan while she is in her moment of perfect reconciliation. This play is a MUST SEE! We intend to do so again.

Last night we went to see “Joan of Arc, the Night Before”, a one act play written and played by Daniela Paluselli and performed at the Boyce Vance theater, 1165 Angelina in the George W Carver Museum right here in Austin.

Well…I am not certain that I have ever been so held by an artist and her monologue. It was amazing to sit motionless for over an hour at this one-act presentation…to witness the artist’s depth of soul in her portrayal of Joan of Arc as her courageous yet grieving heart questioned, reconciled, prepared, determined and understood the meaning of her brief, tragic, hopeful, brokenhearted and consequential life and death. It was spiritual in every sense.

Ageless in it’s eternal questioning of human choices and our courage to recognize evil and when to take action.

It would be a shame to have such talent go unnoticed in Austin. I hope you will think about getting a group together and going to see it. It is not easy going but thought provoking in ways you can imagine.

The theater is great! Parking is plentiful and if you haven’t been to this theater, it beats the traffic and crowding of most around town!

The Night Before. . . is a unique experience undertaken in the lovely amphitheater at the George Carver museum in East Austin.  Daniela somehow singly and simultaneously re-creates the atmospheres of both suffering and joy.  The performance is altogether original and inspiring--within it, we found inspiration for life, for making art and for living in artful life.

Joan of Arc The Night Before takes you to the depth of a young girl’s last night before death.  The performance was gripping and tore to the depth of my soul; every word felt like the blade of St. Joan of Arc’s sword itself.  It was an experience.

Joan of Arc The Night Before tells a heartfelt story that pulls its audience into the hellish nightmare of pending doom, eloquently portrayed by the writer. Words can scarcely describe the level of courage involved in this monumental endeavor. Daniela's utter devotion to the project is self-evident, and we applaud her for her talent for words and emotional execution. She is truly a brave artist to take the stage alone for such a demanding performance, and should be very proud to have accomplished what few are willing to do.

Daniela,

Thank you for a wonderful performance. This is the first time that I have ever seen anything like this. You took us on an emotional journey that was probably close to the exact feelings of Joan of Arc when she was waiting for her execution at sunrise. I will never forget that experience.  You are my inspiration.

When I emerged from the play, Joan of Arc The Night Before, I was surprised at how hopeful, and actually joyful, I felt.  Such a young girl, such a tragic ending for her life, I thought I would be heavy-hearted.  However, I can attribute my hopeful and joyful attitude to Daniela Paluselli's powerful writing and convincing portrayal of Joan's victory of spirit over the horror she endured.  Daniela showed us Joan was not a victim. She could have renounced her Saviour, but she chose Him over this death.  It is one thing to read the story, it was quite another to see "Joan" in person.  I felt every powerful emotion Joan must have felt that night before, as Daniela pulled me from one to another: despair, agonizing fear, homesickness, then strength, confidence and even joy.  Two weeks later, I cannot stop thinking about Joan, and Daniela's incredible performance.  I purchased the script (and look forward to the DVD), so I

can reread the inspiring words Daniela wrote whenever I think life is harsh, whenever I wonder if God is listening, whenever I need to be reminded He is all that matters.

Live, dramatic theatre has a mystical element that neither movie nor TV productions can claim artistic rights to: the ability to interact with the viewing audience by empowering their attention and senses from the heart thumping beginning to the grippingly haunted final moment of the final scene.

The senses are riveted, finely honed, mesmerized. Breathing feels minimal. For awhile it is no longer 2009 in the year of our Lord, but a moment in history come to life bringing with it the excruciating clarity of the human condition.

Such is the monologue play of  “Joan of Arc, the Night Before”. Daniela Paluselli, historian author for this play and consummate actress transcends time to transform herself into the young peasant girl Joan using the powerful intonation of words; deep, realistic, heart wrenching, personal emotions; gripping physical bodily responses to thoughts no doubt that raged through the mind of Joan -  all with the help of the most simplest of props.

While Daniela transforms herself into Joan, the audience is held captive in austere silence hanging on to every word, every moment, wondering how this injustice was allowed to even happen. How could this young peasant girl be a threat to anyone?

Even before the play begins, each person in the audience is visually being prepared to be transcended back in time – a self imposed hush hovers about the auditorium. The stage is devoid of excess props, definitely nothing elaborate as the scene is set to encompass a dismal, lonely jail cell that goes beyond meager existence.

The stage lights dim slowly, and from the cold, eerie darkness, an agonized Joan explodes into every crevice of one’s senses.

Be prepared to delve into the private world of thoughts, words and emotions as Daniela explores the inner recesses of  “Joan of Arc, the Night Before...”

What a stunning performance. I had a great range of emotions throughout.

I loved the set as well.

This play and it's many messages will stay with me for a long time - it felt like being there - by putting yourself in Joan’s mind and heart like that, there is great understanding of the whole world that unfolds - and that understanding is timeless.

This production is so obviously inspired and thus, is inspiring for the audience.  Not only were there moments of feeling literally transported into the dungeon with Joan and sharing in her ordeal, but during the personification of Satan, it felt as if the deepest fears of human beings were being addressed and directed to individuals in the audience to give them a wake-up call for their own lives.  The stretch of emotions that Daniela, as an actress, must reach in this production and her ability to reach them is quite remarkable.   Thank you Daniela, for finding a way to share this beautiful story, not only for the sake of the story itself, but for the message of faith you spread with it.

Daniela Paluselli has written, produced, created, and now acts in a most incredible and exciting theatre work.  Her play, “Joan of Arc, The Night Before” is gripping and provocative in ways making audience members realize this is something they have never seen before and, more than likely, will never get to witness again.  Ms. Paluselli’s imaginative creation of what the final hours of Joan of Arc’s life must have been leaves theatergoers astounded.  Between the very real, stark, and palpable moments depicting scenes of Joan’s boundless strength, determined courage and sweetness in victory, are heart-wrenching glimpses of an internal torment, desire, longing, regret, and unconquerable dread.  In both extremes, the unbridled and vanquishing heroine and the victim of a religious and political intolerance gone wild, Ms. Paluselli demonstrates what truth everyone of us knows in modern day: the dichotomy of what is known and relished and what is unknown and feared, disconcerting.  The writing in itself is work so worthy of notice and acclaim, seldom do we get to behold such depth or deft.  The acting is true to the writing, you know only the playwright herself could give this play the powerful and yet disconcerting rendition Ms. Paluselli delivers.  Costume and scenery are so perfectly rendered, they add, rather than distract to this wondrous experience.  Ms. Paluselli’s talent is abiding and extensive – to miss the display of it would cause your very soul flirt with Joan’s stake.

I so enjoyed the play “Joan of Arc, The Night Before...”. It was such an incredible experience... beautifully done. What an amazing woman I learned Joan of Arc was. God made her strong in such an early time, when it was so daring for a woman to do the things she did. Her faith in God was just phenomenal!

While watching “Joan of Arc, The Night Before...” I realized that a young girl had the faith in God that she had, she had times when she doubted God, that He really loved her, but at the end of her time her spirit joined God where she will be for ever in His heart. The show was great.

The play written and acted by Daniela Paluselli was a vivid experience. The passion flowed through out the story. Daniela portrayed the character with skill. It was an intense performance. Anyone watching would believe she was Joan of Arc. She made it real. The writing itself was excellent. She showed the day before Joan of Arc’s death. You believed in the story and you believed she was the character. She was in the character, she became the character. She made me believe she was Joan of Arc. It was an excellent performance. She went through the pain and suffering of the imminent death of Joan of Arc with beauty, one could tell she herself was in pain. The theater was good. The sound was good. The costume and stage was done well. And it was not boring but interesting though she was only one character, she pulled it together with strength. She showed she had heart for the character and that pulled the whole story together. The stage pieces were simple and elegant. There is a part where she deals with Satan; it was quite interesting and exciting.

Ciao Daniela,

I am an Italian who happen to be in Austin, whilst you were performing Joan of Arc. I was surprised to read that such an unusual play was going on in this city. Moved by curiosity I went to one of your performance. Your acting, your words touched me a lot. You have been able to underline the solitude, the desperation of this brave but naif “Poucelle d’Orleans”. After 500 years nothing has changed, human beings maintained the same characteristics. History should be our best teacher preventing us to repeat the same mistakes, but so far... You have showed courage to write and to perform such a play.

Unbelievable! I saw Joan of Arc The Night Before... in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Hawaii Convention Center. It was probably the most intense performance piece I have ever seen. I felt uneasy most of the hour, and was exhausted when the lights came on. I found the most challenging moments were, strangely enough, the silence between the speaking parts of the monologue. I could feel the agony and inner struggle of Joan as she contemplated her choice. Daniela was Joan in every sense, utterly alone in the cold dark tower with her thoughts and feelings. She was like an animal, then like an angel. Vulnerable yet brave beyond comprehension. Human, yet immortal. I couldn't help but think of the importance of Joan's moment of choice as it relates to our modern times --  How do we hold the course in our respective lives based on our beliefs and principles? Are we willing to make supreme sacrifices for what we believe? What DO we believe? There are many lessons to learn from this story as it is presented here. The greatest lesson for me is in the hope, not the agony and doom. The hope and freedom that come from choice.

I saw "Joan of Arc, The Night Before..." at the Hawai'i Convention Center, in Honolulu. Daniela Paluselli has produced a masterpiece with this one act play.  From beginning to end I was not just an observer, I was actively involved in the emotional roller coaster of this drama.   At the end of the play I found myself a bit unsettled, I was still there, in the dungeon with Joan of Arc, suffering with her, in darkness, waiting for the sound of the final footsteps. Words cannot adequately describe what you’ll see at this event, you MUST come here; you MUST be here; you must FEEL this, then you will know just how rare an event this truly is.

I saw the show “Joan of Arc, The Night Before...” in Honolulu, at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

I did not feel I was at the theatre. I felt I was outside the tower of Joan of Arc, and, from the window, I could see her inside her dungeon... like if everything was happening for real... Daniela was magnificent as Joan of Arc.

Being of Irish descent, I am rarely at a loss for words. But after seeing Daniela Paluselli’s Joan of Arc, The Night Before, I was overwhelmed into silence. I sat in the theater after the performance unable to move, unable to speak. I felt stunned by the power and the raw beauty of this new drama about St. Joan. Historically, psychologically, and spiritually this play hits the mark.

Saint Joan’s story is well known. The glory and tragedy of her life have been the focus of countless books and many plays and movies. But Paluselli’s Joan is utterly unique. She wrote her own script for this tour-de-force, one-woman, one-act play. She stars in it and she produces it. This brings a rich organic wholeness to her passionate creation because the entire work is filtered through just one mind and one soul.

The production begins in total darkness and total silence. It is the night before the horrid execution by fire. From the first moment of this play, I felt I was in that cell with Joan. Paluselli drew me slowly and unerringly into an intense intimacy with the doomed Joan. As the performance unfolded, not only did I witness but I lived through that long night. I felt myself moving with Joan through feeling desperate, confused, helpless, defiant, heroic, powerful, reckless, frightened, betrayed. I felt I was right there beside that young woman facing death in the morning.

Paluselli leads her audience through a labyrinth of emotions accented by the sounds of chains scraping across the floor, screams of anguish, and sobs of joy. There are unpredictable and startling elements in this production, and the ending is poignantly beautiful.

Joan of Arc, The Night Before has been meticulously researched and is an authentic medieval story and is also a totally modern psychological drama about loss of credibility, loss of security, loss of identity, loss of sanity, and long, lonely hours in the night. Be warned: this play gets into your blood; it stays with you; it makes you really feel; it makes you really think; it can make you speechless.

On Saturday November 6th, I attended the performance of Joan of Arc, The Night Before.  I was amazed throughout the performance as each emotion registered and resonated within me to my core:  horror, anger, despair, hopelessness, resignation, then hopefulness, faith, and love.  Daniela's performance was a gift to all in attendance that night.  It was phenomenal how she maintained her focus, energy and emotions throughout the play.  Daniela is a truly amazing and talented actress who brought Joan of Arc to life on stage!  Bravo!!!

In a world filled with pain and struggle, we are reminded that  pain is necessary that we might know joy, and that goodness is born of evil.   In Joan's darkest hour, as heroically and applaudingly portrayed by Daniela Paluselli, the battle between good and evil - listening to self or holding to faith - reveals that when life's strength seems lost, our boldest reminder remains: the quiet voice of God can still be heard.  Leap for joy as Paluselli gifts us with that good thought.

I attended "Joan of Arc, The Night Before" presented by Daniela.  It was amazing how she did the presentation.  I felt like she was really feeling what Joan was going through.  Joan knew what was the right thing to do.   It showed me that we are  to stand up for the right also.  But we are also tempted by the devil.  So how do we do the right things in our daily lives. One way is by praying and talking to God.

May you continue to perform the "Joan of Arc, The Night Before"

The show was interesting from the start. Daniela truly captured the emotion that Joan of Arc must have felt the night before her execution. The sentiments in the play ran the gamut -- from sadness and despair to power, joy, disheartening dereliction.... The monologue was excellent, a true testament to the power of words and inflections.

Daniela gave an outstanding effort -- the show was well-staged and just the right length. I would recommend it to theater-goers anywhere.

Wow! This was really a great show! I was captivated throughout, and I loved the outcome. It made me feel light and joyous, even though the subject matter was so heavy. In 1429 Joan of Arc is reported to have said the following words to Henri Le Royer:  "I was born for this."  After seeing your performance, Daniela, I would echo Joan's words--you were born for this.  Your passionate portrayal of the extraordinary French maid captures the full range of her emotions as she waits for a tortuous death through the long, dark night.  Through the power of your imagination you have made us all compassionate companions of Joan.  We want to hold the frightened 19-year-old close and tell her all will be well.  But, as we all must, she faces death alone.  As Joan wrestles with this lonely truth you transport us to her side and we weep for her terror and find inspiration in her courage. Thank you for bringing Joan's story to us all.

Daniela’s intensity and purity of purpose is exceptional.

To have written the script and performed it in a manner worthy of this title deserves the highest praise.

You shall know the truth; And the truth will set you free. I believe that Daniela Paluselli is inspired by the Holy Spirit to remind us of that promise.

"JOAN OF ARC THE NIGHT BEFORE...", a poetically formatted stage production highlights stepping stones on a pathway to that TRUTH. Paluselli's poetic words clarify addictions to the stepping stones that we must overcome on our journey to the truth.

This is the best play I have ever seen. My son is an actor, and I will go again to see the play with him. Daniela Paluselli's  performance was so moving it took us on a journey through time as if we were actually there.  I feel as if I now know Joan of Arc personally.  Thank you for bringing her to life for us and telling of her closeness to God as well her martyrdom to help all her brethren.  I don’t think that there was a dry eye in the house.

The depth of emotion portrayed in "Joan of Arc: The Night Before" was staggering and didn't seem theatrical or put-on in any way. In the end, what made the play so effective for me was how emotionally believable Daniela's performance was. It left me in a stoic state of mine that stuck with me for hours, and inspired in me the desire to create something as direct and powerful. In all honesty I tried to write a song based on the story, but the result was not as vivid as the play. It seems to me that Daniela has a unique personal connection to Joan of Arc that can be shared and understood, but not copied.

On June 1, 2013 my wife and I witnessed a display of individual artistic heroism in a suspenseful rendition of “Joan of Arc the Night Before” by Daniela Paluselli.  We were certainly spellbound by the depth of execution, quality of performance, the poetic elements, and Daniela’s seemingly inexhaustible energy. Wow!! The show 'Joan of Arc, The Night Before….' was riveting.

Daniela Paluselli definitively has been chosen as a vessel to plant a seed in the souls of God's children. Each person in the audience was moved, most to tears. The resounding comment was, Wow! I believe I can safely say that we all walked away with a sense of urgency to listen intently for the voice of God, to be aware, to be passionate, to be loyal, to be committed, to be surrendered to His calling. Even though Joan suffered such a horrific fate, I found myself almost jealous that she had truly seen the face of God, she had truly heard His calling her name, she had truly felt His loving arms around her. Even though her flesh longed for a longer life, her spirit could not have been more fulfilled; she could not have experienced a greater love.

Bravo Daniela and thank you. You are an inspiration.

While the exploits of Joan of Arc as the leader of a French army may be known, the spiritual and mental battles she encountered the night before she was to be burned at the stake may seldom be considered.  Daniela Paluselli in her performance of Joan of Arc: The Night Before, takes the audience there.  From the depths of the discovery of her imminent execution scheduled for the next day to the heights of rousing her countrymen for the storming of Orleans, Daniela enabled me to experience what could have easily been the range of Joan’s emotions.   At times I felt I was watching the teenaged Joan herself as she questioned her calling, considered what might have been, and assailed the demons who were tempting her.  In the dark, lonely cell, Daniela deftly uses the few props at hand to address family members, the troops and others.  Those who have read the lives of saints know that the now revered holy ones had feet of clay along with their heady experiences of the mystical.  Daniela gave me a taste of both.  I invite you to leave contemporary society for a while and see how Joan will affect you.

The June 2013 production of this one-woman play had a profound impact on me. I attended a second performance offered in spring 2014, and will bring more guests with me when it is offered.

For me, Joan’s battle against the military aggression unleashed on her fellow citizens parallel the battle against injustices inflicted on the innocents in our own, contemporary settings. It highlights the role of courage and faith in overcoming evil. And most importantly, this performance shows clearly how one person can, with the help of God, effect dramatic change against all odds.

The play is emotionally intense. Daniela Paluselli has a special gift for understanding and portraying human nature. She takes her audience through a journey of faith via the Saint’s search for God in her desperate hour. It’s a monologue in which she begins by questioning God’s purpose, even His existence, then, relives her initial call by God, her experience on the battlefields, confronts Evil, acknowledges the “normal” life she’s given up to be God’s champion, and finally reaches the point where she’s convinced of her love for God, and His for her. It’s a powerful experience. This play has introduced me to Joan, a young woman about whom I knew nearly nothing, and who has become for me an inspiration.

Margaret Paine, Austin, TX

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daniela's performance was phenomenal!

She is amazing. I did not know until the end she also wrote the script. Her performance left me not only wanting to know more about this courageous young woman but also confirming that I have a long way to go on my own faith journey.

One of the things that caught my attention and is still in my thoughts was how all Satan's temptations, his lies that feed on our desperation and fears we are not worthy of God's mercy,  are all still valid in today's world.  The more the world changes the more we stay the same.  It also makes me ask " What would I do?"  Would I have the courage to die for my faith?   Today we have a Sudanese woman that has been sentenced to death because she is a Christian,  one would think that this no longer happens. Is my faith that strong?

The end of the performance is what touched me the most. I was in tears as I heard Joan's words of God's love for us...

I want to see this play again and invite family and friends to join me.
